Shabbat | High Holidays | Chanukah | Passover Seder Services
We enjoy services together in conjunction with our many holidays such as Shabbat, the High Holidays, Purim, Chanukah, Passover, and Sukkot. Our services form part of our observance of Judaism and are held with an emphasis on participation and learning for all ages. Our local community social hall serves as our sanctuary for most services. In addition, we enjoy services at beautiful outdoor locations and our members' homes.
Our Shabbat services are led by Cantor Zucker and are structured to ensure attendees of all ages participate in the services as much as possible. Audience or individual participation includes reading English translations of key prayers, singing and chanting well-known prayers in Hebrew, and group activities that include being called to the Torah to participate in its study. We often enjoy Shabbat dinner as a congregation before Shabbat services. At the Shabbat dinners, we enjoy each other's company, great food, and begin the transition from our busy daily lives to Shabbat.
For High Holiday services, we partner with George Mason University (GMU) Hillel at the
Fairfax campus. GMU Hillel provide a meaningful service for its students while providing outreach to
local families. Services are held in the GMU Fairfax campus Student Union II
building. You can find out more about the services by visiting the
GMU Hillel site.
Congregants should pre-register for High Holiday services by contacting us. A donation for GMU Hillel is requested. GMU Hillel requests a minimum donation of $36 per family. If you require a parking pass, there is an additional $10.00 fee per car. Parking passes must be paid in advance. Please send your reservations and donations to Congregation Yad Shalom, P.O. Box 1557, Centreville, VA 20122. In addition, it is our tradition to gather as a Congregation during the High Holidays at a nearby body of water to recite the Tashlich Prayer that symbolizes our wish to cast off our sins, and to be forgiven by G-d.
We celebrate the Festival of Lights by each of us bringing a menorah and candles for a spectacular group menorah lighting. Cantor Zucker leads us in the Chanukah blessings and with Chanukah songs, both old and new. We enjoy the traditional foods of Chanukah including delicious latkes, spin dreidels, sing, and meet other Jewish families in our community.
We join our families together to celebrate Passover with friends, traditional foods, prayers, and songs in a warm and friendly environment. We enjoy a wonderful retelling of the exodus from Egypt that is enjoyed by young and old alike. |
